Baltic Farmers Increasingly Choose Equipment Rental Over Machine Ownership

Economic instability and adverse weather conditions have prompted farmers to reconsider whether owning every machine makes economic sense. According to the head of Baltic Agro Equipment Rental, leasing helps distribute risks and maintain better control over costs.

The agricultural sector has seen growing interest in equipment rental in recent years, as economic instability and challenging weather conditions have forced farmers to critically review their spending. Taavi Lõhmuste, head of business development at Baltic Agro Equipment Rental, confirms that an increasing number of farmers are asking themselves whether owning every machine is economically justified.

"The more unstable economic environment of recent years, adverse weather conditions, and the need to keep costs under better control have prompted farmers to increasingly question whether owning every machine makes sense," said Lõhmuste. Rental offers a solution where equipment can be used exactly when needed, without bearing the full burden of ownership costs.

Equipment rental enables agricultural producers to respond more flexibly to market and weather changes. Instead of tying capital to expensive machine purchases, funds can be directed to other business areas or used as a buffer for unexpected expenses. This is particularly important for smaller farms that cannot afford to own all the necessary machinery.

Experts emphasize that the rental model has its limitations — for long-term contracts, total costs can exceed the price of machine ownership. However, rental provides the assurance that equipment is always in working order and up to date, since maintenance obligations often fall on the rental company. The Baltic agricultural sector is monitoring these trends closely, as climate change and market prices present the sector with ever new challenges.
