Curator Bianka Soe, the creative force behind the Baltic illustration and animation exhibition "Baltic Island" heading to Tokyo, has said that artists from Estonia and the wider Baltic region have a unique ability to transform their position on Europe's periphery into a genuine strength.

Speaking on Klassikaraadio's cultural programme "Delta", Bianka Soe explained that being on the margins of larger cultural and economic centres does not hold Baltic artists back — quite the opposite. She argued that geographic and cultural distance from the mainstream often pushes creators to develop more original and inventive approaches.

"The peripheral position forces you to find your own solutions," Soe noted, adding that this dynamic has historically produced some of the most distinctive voices in Baltic illustration and animation. Rather than simply following trends set elsewhere, artists from Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have carved out a recognisable visual identity.

The exhibition "Baltic Island" is set to present this creative identity to Japanese audiences in Tokyo, showcasing works that reflect both the shared heritage and individual differences among the three Baltic nations. The project aims to build cultural bridges between the Baltic region and East Asia, offering Tokyo viewers a window into a part of Europe that remains relatively unfamiliar to many.

Soe's curatorial vision underlines a broader point about the value of cultural diversity and decentralisation in the arts. By championing work from smaller and often overlooked regions, initiatives like "Baltic Island" challenge the assumption that meaningful creative innovation only emerges from major global cultural hubs.
