Day 1553: Ukraine strikes Russian military infrastructure in Luhansk with Storm Shadow missiles

Ukraine's Air Force launched British-French Storm Shadow cruise missiles against Russian military infrastructure in occupied Luhansk Oblast. A leading US think tank says Ukrainian drone operations have successfully halted Russian advances along the front line, marking a new phase in the war.

Ukraine's Armed Forces General Staff announced on Monday that the Air Force deployed British-French Storm Shadow cruise missiles in strikes targeting Russian military infrastructure in the occupied Luhansk Oblast. The strikes represent a continued use of Western-supplied long-range weapons deep inside Russian-held territory.

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington-based defence think tank, Ukraine has effectively used drone warfare to halt Russian ground advances along the front line. The ISW assessment describes this development as a new phase in the ongoing conflict, suggesting that Ukrainian forces have found a way to offset Russian numerical advantages through technological means.

The Storm Shadow missile, developed jointly by the United Kingdom and France, has a range of over 250 kilometres and is designed to strike hardened military targets such as command centres, ammunition depots, and infrastructure. Ukraine has been using these missiles since 2023, following their transfer by London and Paris.

The use of drones to halt Russian advances signals a shift in battlefield dynamics. Ukraine has increasingly relied on first-person-view (FPV) drones and longer-range strike drones to disrupt Russian logistics and troop concentrations, reducing the effectiveness of Moscow's offensive operations in eastern Ukraine.

Monday marked the 1,553rd day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022. Fighting continues across multiple front-line sectors, with Luhansk Oblast remaining one of the key contested regions in the east.
