EKA graduate Inga Tislar debuts spatial installation 'Persona Limbo' at Tase festival

Musician and photographer Inga Tislar is showcasing her graduation work 'Persona Limbo' at the Estonian Academy of Arts' Tase festival. The spatial installation explores indecisiveness and liminal states. Tislar says the work is not outright depressive, but it does reflect an inability to make decisions.

The Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) in Tallinn has opened its annual graduation festival Tase, where one of the standout works is a spatial installation titled 'Persona Limbo' by Inga Tislar — a name most Estonians know from the music world, now completing her studies in photography.

Speaking to ERR, Tislar described her creative intent: she wanted to build a space that has no beginning and no end — a kind of suspended environment where the visitor loses their sense of direction and time. The title 'Persona Limbo' reflects a state of being caught between choices, unable to move forward or backward.

«See töö ei ole otseselt depressiivne, aga otsustusvõimetust peegeldab küll,» Tislar said, acknowledging that the piece draws on personal experience with paralysis in decision-making — a feeling many people recognise but rarely discuss openly.

The Tase festival is EKA's flagship annual event showcasing the work of graduating students across all disciplines, from fine arts and design to architecture and fashion. This year's edition brings together dozens of final-year projects, with Tislar's installation among those attracting significant public attention given her profile as a musician.

For Tislar, the graduation project represents a meaningful pivot — not an abandonment of music, but an expansion of her artistic language into physical and visual space. Whether audiences encounter 'Persona Limbo' as a meditation on personal stagnation or simply as an immersive aesthetic experience, the work signals a confident new chapter for one of Estonia's most recognisable creative voices.
