Estonia is experiencing a real epidemic of online and telephone fraud. A wave of deception has swept across the entire country, and no one is safe from it — neither experienced businessmen, nor highly educated specialists, nor even law enforcement officers.

Scammers are rapidly improving their methods, moving from mass mailings to targeted, personalized attacks. They gather information about victims, tailor their stories to specific individuals, and skillfully play on trust, fear, or greed. This is why nearly anyone can now fall for their schemes.

Particular concern is raised by the fact that among the victims are people who, it would seem, should be well informed about threats: police officers, lawyers, financiers. This indicates that the problem has long gone beyond "digital illiteracy" and requires a systemic response from the state and society.

Estonian society needs to acknowledge: the fight against fraud is not only a task for the police. Banks, telecommunications companies, government agencies, and citizens themselves must join forces. As long as everyone thinks it won't happen to them personally, the count of losses — both financial and human — will only continue to grow.
