ПолитикаFormer Estonian Prime Minister Mart Laar, who serves as honorary chairman of the Isamaa party, travelled to Gdańsk, Poland between May 24 and 27 at the invitation of former Polish President Lech Wałęsa.
The visit brought together two of Central and Eastern Europe's most prominent figures from the post-communist democratic transition era. Gdańsk holds deep historical significance as the birthplace of the Solidarity movement, which Wałęsa led in the 1980s before Poland threw off communist rule.
Laar, who served as Estonia's Prime Minister twice — first in 1992–1994 and again in 1999–2003 — is widely credited with steering Estonia through its own rapid democratic and economic transformation following the restoration of independence.
