Estonians are buying less meat products

Meat product consumption fell significantly in Estonia last year. Fresh meat sales grew as the only exception, but beef lost market share even there. The trend reflects changing consumer habits in Estonia.

Estonia's meat product market experienced a clear downward trend last year, new data showed. Consumers reduced purchases of various meat products, reflecting both changing dietary habits and economic pressure on household budgets.

The fresh meat category emerged as the only bright spot, managing to show growth despite the overall downward trend. However, this segment was not entirely problem-free — beef lost market share among consumers, suggesting that shoppers are increasingly choosing cheaper alternatives.

The decline in meat consumption is a broad phenomenon affecting processed meat products, sausages, and other ready-made products. Food experts have previously pointed out that such changes are linked to both growing health awareness and rising cost of living, which is pressuring consumers to tighten their budgets.

In the future, developments in the meat market will largely depend on whether price levels stabilize and whether consumer purchasing preferences continue to shift towards plant-based alternatives, whose popularity has grown in Estonia in recent years.
