Estonia's phosphorite research phase two ends 1 million under budget

Estonia is nearing completion of the second phase of phosphorite research, during which assessments were conducted of mineral resource utilisation opportunities and economic and environmental impacts. Despite the scope of work proving larger than initially planned, the final project cost came in approximately 1 million cheaper than expected.

Estonia is approaching the completion of the second phase of phosphorite research, which has assessed both the utilisation possibilities of phosphorite and its potential economic and environmental impact. The research project delivered a positive surprise: although the volume of work increased compared to the original plan, the overall final project cost came in significantly lower than anticipated – approximately 1 million less in total.

Phosphorite is a mineral resource widely present in Estonia, and the prospects for its mining have attracted renewed attention in recent years in connection with the question of ensuring strategic raw materials in Europe. The second phase of research aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the actual opportunities to utilise this resource in an economically rational manner, taking into account environmental risks and obligations.

The lower final cost provides the state with the opportunity to direct the savings towards future research or other priority areas. The results of the phosphorite research are important input for policymakers who will decide whether and under what conditions it would be expedient for Estonia to proceed with phosphorite mining.
