European Commission Urges Baltic States to Accelerate Rail Baltic Construction
The European Commission has issued a recommendation to the Baltic states to accelerate implementation of the Rail Baltic project. Although Latvia's budget deficit exceeds 3% of GDP, it falls within the additional flexibility granted for countries increasing defence spending.
ЭстонияThe European Commission has called on the Baltic states to accelerate implementation of the Rail Baltic railway project in its recent country-specific recommendations. The recommendations apply to all three Baltic states, including Latvia, whose budget deficit exceeds the EU's standard budgetary rules threshold of 3% of GDP.
Latvia's Budget and Rail Baltic
Although Latvia's budget deficit exceeds the European Union's standard budgetary rules limit, it is nonetheless considered acceptable thanks to the exceptional flexibility that the EU has offered to countries increasing defence spending. Nevertheless, Rail Baltic remains a separate point in the European Commission's recommendations to Latvia.
Strategic Importance to the Region
Rail Baltic is one of the most important infrastructure projects in the Baltic region, connecting Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius to Europe's railway network. The project aims to strengthen both passenger mobility and freight transport, and to improve the connectivity of the Baltic states with the rest of Europe. The European Commission's recommendation to accelerate the project's implementation signals that Brussels considers its completion a priority.
