Expert: Armenians Want Peace, Not a Choice Between Europe and Russia

An Armenian think tank analyst dismisses the widespread perception that the country's upcoming elections represent a choice between European integration and a return to Russia. According to the expert, Armenians primarily desire peace, not a geopolitical reorientation. The analyst argues that Europe holds misconceptions about this issue.

An Armenian think tank analyst warns that a misconception about the meaning of the country's upcoming elections is spreading in Europe. According to the expert, it is not a choice between European integration and a return to Russia – as is often assumed elsewhere in Europe.

Peace is the main priority

According to the expert, Armenians' primary desire is peace, especially following years of conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Geopolitical issues are certainly important, but they do not dominate voters' everyday concerns.

Armenia has taken several steps toward Europe in recent years, including visa liberalization talks with the European Union and distancing itself from some Russia-linked security structures. However, the analyst emphasizes that this does not necessarily mean a complete turn from east to west.

European misconceptions about Armenia

According to the think tank analyst, European analysts and policymakers view Armenia's situation through an overly black-and-white geopolitical logic. In reality, the country's foreign policy identity is more complex, and Armenians themselves want a pragmatic approach that ensures above all security and stability.

The upcoming elections thus offer Armenia an opportunity to decide on domestic issues – the economy, security, and welfare – not merely on foreign policy orientation.
