Finland's unemployment jumps by nearly 50,000 in April year-on-year
Finland's unemployment rose sharply in April 2026, with nearly 50,000 more people out of work compared to the same month last year. The number of employed persons also fell by 31,000 over the same period, according to Statistics Finland.
ЭкономикаFinland is facing a significant deterioration in its labour market, with the latest figures from Statistics Finland showing that the number of unemployed people in the country rose by 48,000 in April 2026 compared to April of the previous year.
At the same time, the number of employed persons declined by 31,000 year-on-year, painting a concerning picture of the Nordic country's economic health. The dual trend — fewer people in work and more people searching for jobs — suggests underlying structural pressures on the Finnish economy.
The figures are particularly notable given Finland's close economic and geographic ties to Estonia and the broader Baltic region. Labour market developments in Finland are closely watched in Estonia, as the two countries share strong trade links and a sizeable number of cross-border workers. A weakening Finnish economy could have knock-on effects for Estonian exporters and workers employed in Finland.
