A district court in Finland convicted a shop assistant of embezzlement and fraud committed using bottle deposit slips. According to the court ruling, the prosecution proved that the assistant illegally obtained approximately 5,000 in cash and goods from the store.

The Finnish prosecution initially brought charges on a much larger scale, claiming the assistant had accumulated over 50,000 at the store's expense. However, the district court concluded that this could not be fully proven and that the evidence supporting the conviction covered only about a tenth of the claimed sum.

The case involved both direct theft of cash from the shop and manipulation of bottle deposit slips — a method where an employee issued or used deposit refund vouchers illegally for personal gain. Such schemes are among the most common forms of internal fraud in the retail sector.

The case serves as a reminder of how important it is for shops to regularly monitor staff activities and maintain internal controls, particularly with regard to the use of cash registers and bottle deposit machines.
