Former Emirates flight attendant warns against wearing flip-flops on planes
A former Emirates airline employee has issued a warning about a commonly worn clothing item on flights. According to the ex-crew member, flip-flops — popular especially during summer travel — can turn out to be a surprisingly poor choice aboard an aircraft.
КультураA former Emirates flight attendant has sparked discussion among frequent travellers by warning against wearing flip-flops on board an aircraft, calling the popular summer footwear a potentially dangerous choice in the cabin environment.
Many passengers opt for the most comfortable clothing possible when flying, particularly during the warmer months when journeys often begin in hot weather. Open-toed sandals and flip-flops are a natural choice for many, offering breathability and ease — but aviation insiders say this convenience comes with hidden risks.
According to the ex-Emirates crew member, flip-flops offer virtually no foot protection in the event of an emergency evacuation, where cabin floors can become littered with debris, sharp objects, or even fire. Secure, closed-toe footwear gives passengers a far better chance of safely navigating an aircraft exit or escape slide.
Flight attendants also point out that aircraft cabins harbour a surprising amount of bacteria and other contaminants on their floors, making open footwear an unnecessary hygiene risk — even during a routine flight with no emergency involved.
The advice aligns with broader guidance from aviation safety professionals, who recommend that passengers wear practical, sturdy shoes when travelling by air, treating the flight itself as a safety environment rather than an extension of a beach holiday.
