Former Estonian Air Force Commander: Swedish Gripens Push Russian Bombers Away from Front Line
Estonia's former air force commander Jaak Tarien views Sweden's decision to provide Ukraine with Gripen fighter jets equipped with Meteor air-to-air missiles as a significant military step. According to him, this will help push Russian combat aviation further from the front lines and ease the burden on Ukraine's air defences.
ПолитикаEstonia's former air force commander Jaak Tarien views Sweden's decision to provide Ukraine with Gripen fighter jets equipped with long-range Meteor air-to-air missiles as a significant military step. According to Tarien, this will help push Russian combat aviation considerably further from the front lines.
Gripens equipped with long-range weapons increase Ukraine's capability to neutralize the threat posed by Russian air forces without both sides coming into direct contact on the battlefield. This shifts the situation in favour of Ukraine's air defences, even if in the near term neither side will be capable of achieving full air superiority.
Tarien stressed that the Meteor missile's long range is key in this context. Russian bombers and attack aircraft must abandon their usual positions to avoid the threat, which limits their impact on ground operations.
Sweden's decision to provide Ukraine with Gripen fighters is part of continued support from Western nations. Together with advanced Meteor missiles, this represents a significant addition to capabilities that could influence the dynamics of air warfare over Ukraine.
