Gym vs cardio: a third training method gains ground in sport
The sports world has long debated whether strength training or cardio is more beneficial for the body. Now a third alternative has emerged that is growing increasingly popular.
СпортFor decades, fitness circles have been divided over the merits of strength training versus cardio — which one leads to peak physical condition? Recent trends, however, suggest the answer may lie in a third approach entirely.
The fitness world has traditionally been dominated by two camps: those who swear by lifting weights, and those who consider cardio the only true measure of fitness. Both approaches have their merits — strength training builds muscle mass and boosts metabolism, while cardio strengthens the cardiovascular system and burns calories.
In recent years, however, sports trend research has shown that combined, or functional, training is gaining an increasing number of supporters. This approach combines strength and endurance training elements and adds mobility and balance exercises. Workouts such as CrossFit, HIIT (high-intensity interval training), and functional strength training offer the body well-rounded conditioning.
Athletes and healthcare professionals emphasize that the best training is the one a person actually does consistently. Individual differences, health status, and personal goals determine which training method works best for any given person. What matters is finding an activity that brings joy and can be sustained long-term.
