Home insurance deductibles leave Estonian policyholders confused and out of pocket

Many Estonian home insurance customers assume that once a claim is paid, the insurer handles all remaining formalities — including recovering their deductible when a third party was at fault. In practice, getting that deductible back depends almost entirely on the policyholder's own knowledge and initiative.

Thousands of Estonian homeowners carry home insurance expecting full protection when things go wrong. But a common misconception is causing real financial harm: many policyholders believe that if the damage was caused by someone else — a neighbour's burst pipe, for example — the insurer will automatically recover the deductible on their behalf. That is often not the case.

What policyholders assume

The typical expectation is straightforward: pay the deductible, let the insurer handle the rest. Policyholders generally trust that the insurance company will pursue the at-fault party and, once compensation is secured, return the deductible amount without any prompting. This assumption feels logical — after all, the insured party was not responsible for the damage in the first place.

However, Estonian insurance practice frequently works differently. Whether a paid deductible is ever returned can depend almost entirely on how informed and proactive the policyholder is. Those who know to explicitly request the recovery — and follow up — are far more likely to see that money again than those who simply wait.

The burden falls on the customer

Insurers do have the right of subrogation, meaning they can legally step into the customer's shoes and claim compensation from the party responsible for the loss. But exercising that right on the customer's behalf, and then passing the recovered deductible back, is not always done automatically. Some companies do so as standard practice; others require a direct request from the policyholder.

Consumer advocates stress that people should ask their insurer in writing, at the time of filing a claim, whether the deductible will be recovered if fault can be attributed to a third party. Keeping records of all communication and damage documentation significantly improves the chances of a successful outcome. For those who have already paid a deductible in a case where another party was clearly responsible, it may still be worth contacting the insurer and asking explicitly — even after the claim has been settled.
