How to keep peonies fresh longer: simple tips for a vase full of blooms
Peonies are known as the divas of cut flowers, wilting within days of being placed in a vase. However, a few easy tricks can significantly extend their bloom life and keep them looking beautiful longer.
KultuurPeonies are arguably the most dramatic of all cut flowers — lush, fragrant, and frustratingly short-lived once placed in a vase. Many flower lovers find that their blooms begin to wilt within just a few days of being brought indoors, leaving them wondering whether all that beauty was worth it. The good news is that with a handful of simple techniques, you can keep your peonies looking fresh and full for considerably longer.
The first and perhaps most important step is how you cut the stems. Always use a sharp, clean knife or scissors and cut at a 45-degree angle under running water. This increases the surface area available for water uptake and prevents air bubbles from blocking the stem. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline, as submerged foliage quickly rots and introduces bacteria into the water, which is the number one enemy of cut flower longevity.
## Water and placement matter
Fresh, cool water is essential. Change the water in the vase every one to two days and give the stems a fresh diagonal cut each time. Peonies prefer cooler temperatures, so avoid placing them near heat sources, sunny windowsills, or ripening fruit — ethylene gas released by fruit accelerates wilting. A cool room or even a short overnight stay in the refrigerator can dramatically slow the ageing process.
The timing of when you buy or cut peonies also plays a key role. Choosing blooms that are still in the bud stage — just beginning to show colour — will give you the longest display. Fully open flowers, while beautiful, have already used up much of their energy and will fade quickly. A small amount of flower food dissolved in the vase water can also help, as it provides nutrients and contains an antibacterial agent that keeps the water clean.
## Keep them away from drafts
Finally, avoid placing peonies in drafty spots or directly under air conditioning vents. Moving air dries out the petals faster and shortens their time in the spotlight. With these easy adjustments, your peonies can stay gorgeous for up to ten days — turning what is usually a fleeting pleasure into a lasting centrepiece.
