Innocent airport snacks could land EU travellers with fines
As the summer holiday season kicks off, travellers should be aware that popular European airlines like Ryanair, easyJet, TUI and Jet2 have imposed strict restrictions on food and drink allowed on board. Even items purchased at airports can cause problems at the gate, and in worst cases, result in substantial fines at the destination.
КультураSummer holiday season is in full swing and millions of Europeans have already packed their bags and are heading to sunny destinations. However, many travellers don't realise that food or drink purchased at the airport can cause unexpected problems on board.
Popular European budget airlines Ryanair, easyJet, TUI and Jet2 have introduced strict rules governing what passengers can bring onto the aircraft. The restrictions apply to both liquids and certain food items, so it's worth carefully checking what you pack in your hand luggage before heading to the gate.
It's particularly important to remember the liquid rules: drinks purchased at the airport that aren't sealed in tamper-evident packaging may cause issues at security. Additionally, some destination countries have strict customs and quarantine regulations on importing certain food items, so carrying fresh fruit or meat products, for example, could end up landing you with a hefty fine.
Travellers are advised to familiarise themselves with both the airline's rules and those of their destination country before heading to the airport. If in doubt, it's better to opt for sealed packages sold in airport shops and leave sensitive food items out of your suitcase altogether.
