Jaspar Vaher's mentor compares young Estonian rally ace to Loeb and Rovanperä
Young Estonian rally driver Jaspar Vaher made a strong impression at his first European Rally Championship event driving a Toyota Yaris Rally2, but a serious crash ended his chances. Despite the setback, mentor Juho Hänninen drew comparisons to all-time rally greats Sébastien Loeb and Kalle Rovanperä.
SportEstonian rally talent Jaspar Vaher turned heads at his debut European Rally Championship event behind the wheel of a Toyota Yaris Rally2, showing blistering pace before a heavy crash forced him out of contention.
Despite the disappointment of the accident, Vaher's mentor and Toyota youth programme coach Juho Hänninen refused to focus on the negative, instead drawing striking comparisons between the young Estonian and two of the greatest names in rally history — Sébastien Loeb and Kalle Rovanperä.
Vaher competes under the Toyota rally team's junior programme, which has a strong track record of developing world-class talent. His performance in the early stages of the event underlined why the programme selected him, with the Estonian demonstrating raw speed that belied his limited experience at this level.
The crash, while costly in terms of results, is not uncommon at this stage of a driver's development, and Hänninen's confidence in Vaher's abilities appears undimmed. Being compared to Loeb — the nine-time world rally champion — and Rovanperä — who became the youngest ever WRC champion — is a remarkable endorsement for any emerging driver.
For Estonian motorsport, Vaher's progression through one of the world's most prestigious factory junior programmes represents an exciting development, with fans hopeful that the young ace can convert his evident potential into results as the season continues.
