Kaja Kallas: the EU should participate in Iran arms negotiations

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has proposed that the European Union could play a role in arms negotiations related to Iran. To date, the EU has refrained from any direct military involvement in the US and Israel conflict with Tehran. Kallas sees an opportunity for the bloc to engage in the diplomatic process.

The European Union's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has proposed that the EU could take on a more active role in arms negotiations on Iran. This comes as the European Union has so far carefully avoided any direct military involvement in the conflict between the US and Israel and Tehran.

According to Kallas, she sees a diplomatic role for the European Union that would help reduce tensions. The proposal would represent a significant shift in the EU's current approach, which has prioritised staying out of direct military confrontations in the region.

Iran has been at the centre of tensions related to both its nuclear programme and regional conflicts. The EU has largely operated in the background, while the US and Israel have been more direct parties to the conflict. Kallas's proposal suggests a desire to bring a stronger European voice to international negotiations.

If the EU decided to take on a more active role, it would be a diplomatically significant step — the bloc represents 27 member states and wields considerable economic and political influence on the international stage.
