The Narva city council office declined to register a document package submitted by the opposition majority following an independently held session on 1 June. At the session, the opposition voted to remove Narva's current leadership and elected a new council chair, deputy chairs, and a new mayor. The opposition subsequently submitted the documents to the justice ministry.
Ида-ВирумааThe Narva city council office refused to register a document package submitted by the opposition majority after they held an independent city council session on 1 June. At that session, the decision was made to dismiss Narva's current leadership and elect both a new council chair with his deputies as well as a new mayor.
Since the office declined to register the documents, the opposition decided to take the next step by turning to the justice ministry, submitting all relevant materials there. The opposition aims to legitimize the decisions made at its 1 June session and secure recognition from official authorities.
The situation in Narva has become tense, as the city council opposition and the current governing coalition have become locked in a sharp conflict over the administration of the city. Opposition representatives argue that they have a sufficient majority to legally take over the city's governance, while the office's decision suggests that the formal validity of the session is being contested.
