National Library architect: Estonia lacks public indoor space in winter

Ville Lausmäe, interior architect at the National Library, highlighted that while Estonia has many parks and green spaces, public indoor space during winter is essentially non-existent. He discussed this on Vikerradio's morning programme.

Estonia has a shortage of public indoor spaces in winter where people can simply spend time – according to Ville Lausmäe, interior architect at the National Library, who shared his thoughts on Vikerradio's programme "Vikerhommik".

According to Lausmäe, Estonia certainly has plenty of parks and green spaces that offer good opportunities to be outdoors during the warm season, but during winter months public space becomes essentially empty. People lack a place to go without having to buy something or consume something.

In this context, the National Library serves an important civic function – it is one of the few places where everyone is welcome regardless of whether they come to read books, work, or simply seek warmth. Public indoor space is, in Lausmäe's view, important both for social cohesion and for people's well-being.
