Opta supercomputer predicts World Cup winner through 10,000 simulations
Leading football statistics agency Opta ran this year's FIFA World Cup through 10,000 computer simulations using its supercomputer. The results reveal clear favourites and nations with virtually no chance of winning. This year's World Cup is larger than ever before.
СпортThis year's FIFA World Cup is a record size, but according to statistics experts, the field of favourites remains traditionally narrow. Opta, the renowned football statistics aggregation agency, used its supercomputer to simulate the tournament's outcome 10,000 times in an attempt to identify which teams have the greatest probability of bringing the title home.
The simulation results confirmed that the higher echelons of world football remain concentrated in a select few nations. The favourites include traditionally strong football countries whose national teams have stood out at previous World Cups. The analysis also revealed which four nations have essentially no chance of winning the title — their share of victory in the simulations remained marginal.
Opta is one of the world's most respected sports statistics companies, with data widely used by both media organisations and football clubs in making strategic decisions. The 10,000 simulations are based on numerous variables, including current player form, historical results, and team composition.
