The Pentagon has made the development of multiple revolutionary defence technologies a priority, as the US has fallen behind its main rivals—China and Russia—in some areas. This concerns, above all, hypersonic weapons, which are considered the next major revolution in warfare.

Hypersonic weapons at the forefront

Hypersonic weapons are characterised by the ability to fly at more than five times the speed of sound, or Mach 5, while manoeuvring during flight. This makes them extremely difficult for conventional air defence systems to intercept and reduces the enemy's response time to virtually nothing. China and Russia are ahead of the US in this field, which is why Washington is now accelerating the development of multiple parallel programmes.

Five key technologies

Beyond hypersonic solutions, the Pentagon is focusing on artificial intelligence-based systems capable of supporting real-time combat decisions, autonomous drone systems, cyber capabilities, and directed-energy weapons such as laser systems. All of these technologies aim to give the US military an advantage in future great-power confrontation.

The significance of these developments extends beyond the US military position alone—it directly concerns NATO member states, including Estonia.
