Riigikogu member Izmailova: Estonia's biggest problem is poverty, not LGBT issues
Riigikogu member Zuzu Izmailova argues that poverty and growing inequality, rather than LGBT issues dominating public discourse, lie at the heart of social tensions and hate speech in Estonia. She believes people's bitterness and divisiveness stem from a sense of being left behind. According to Izmailova, what actually improves people's day is the opportunity to vent their anger at someone else.
ПолитикаRiigikogu member Zuzu Izmailova stated in the programme "Touch Me" that in her view, Estonia's true core problem is poverty and inequality — not the LGBT+ issues that dominate public debate.
Izmailova explained that much of the social division, bitterness and hate speech stems from many people feeling left behind by life. At the same time, they see others doing well, which breeds tensions, resentment and hatred.
"I believe it comes from poverty. These people feel they have been deprived of something and the only thing that makes their day better is if they can speak badly about someone," Izmailova said.
According to the politician, the heated public debate around LGBT+ rights and tolerance is more of a symptom than a cause. The real solution lies in reducing economic inequality and improving people's wellbeing, which in turn would reduce the hatred and tensions present in society.
