Russia Lures Recruits With Job Promises in Belarus and China

Misleading military recruitment ads have appeared on Russia's popular Avito job board, offering service in "rear positions" in Belarus and China. However, investigative outlet Verstka warns that those who respond may actually end up in combat zones in Ukraine.

Russia's job advertisement portal Avito is circulating deceptive recruitment ads that promise service in the "rear" of a "military special operation" in Belarus and China, according to investigative outlet Verstka. The ads are presented in a way that gives the impression of a safe rear echelon far from the front lines.

According to Verstka's investigation, however, these ads are misleading — those interested who respond to the ads may actually find themselves on the Ukrainian battlefield. Such recruitment tactics are aimed at those who want to earn military service bonuses but fear direct participation in combat.

Ads posted on Avito speak of well-paid positions and stable income without directly mentioning participation in combat. The mention of Belarus and China in the ads is intended to create the impression that these are offers from relatively distant and relatively safe regions.

Verstka is an independent Russian investigative media outlet that has previously documented numerous Russian army recruitment and supply schemes related to the war in Ukraine. The outlet warns potential candidates that trusting such ads can lead to unforeseen and life-threatening consequences.
