Vladimir Medinsky, adviser to the Russian President and former culture minister, has proposed that the quality of films financed from the state budget should be subject to stricter monitoring. Medinsky made this statement in an interview with Russian magazine Expert.

According to Medinsky, Russian cinema clearly suffers from a lack of state quality oversight. In his view, in cases of poor-quality films produced with public funds, it should be possible to demand that the film be remade or the funding be repaid.

"You make trash — you redo it," Medinsky summed up his position in the interview with the magazine. This principle, in his opinion, should apply to all state-supported film projects.

Medinsky is a long-standing influential figure in Russian cultural policy — he served as Russia's culture minister from 2012 to 2020, after which he was appointed as an adviser to the Kremlin's presidential administration. He is also known as the head of the Russian delegation in negotiations on Ukraine-related matters.
