Soviet-era cafeteria opens at the Estonian Agricultural Museum
A new exhibition at the Estonian Agricultural Museum showcases the distinctive canteen culture of the Soviet period. The displays transport visitors back in time to an era when Soviet food service traditions dominated the dining table.
КультураThe Estonian Agricultural Museum has opened a new exhibition recreating the Soviet-era cafeteria environment. The exhibits introduce the peculiarities of food service culture from that period — from the interior design of canteens to the dishes characteristic of the Soviet dining table.
The exhibition also addresses questions that puzzled Soviet diners: where did the gravy come from when there was no meat, and where did the meat go altogether. The grand Soviet collective catering system was a phenomenon in itself, combining communal eating with the constraints of a planned economy.
The museum invites all those interested to discover Soviet everyday life through food and dining rituals. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to understand how food service shaped the daily life of that society and the relationships between people.
