Study: Estonians increasingly view honey as an ordinary sweetener
A new consumer survey shows that while honey is widely present on Estonian tables, its unique status as a natural product is fading from consumer consciousness. More and more people see honey simply as a regular sweetener rather than a special natural product.
ЭстонияA consumer survey conducted in Estonia reveals a concerning trend: while honey remains popular on the food table, its reputation as a unique natural product has noticeably weakened. According to the survey, a large proportion of Estonians now treat honey as an ordinary sweetener, similar to sugar or syrup.
Experts believe this shift is partly due to market saturation and the influx of cheap imported honey products, which have turned honey into an everyday commodity. The distinctive character and value of local honey has faded into the background in consumers' eyes, posing a threat both to beekeepers' livelihoods and to the preservation of Estonia's honey-making heritage.
According to representatives of beekeeping associations, consumers need to be more actively informed about the distinctive qualities and benefits of local honey, and educated on how artisanal honey differs from industrially produced alternatives. There is also emphasis on the need for consumers to pay more attention to the origin and production methods of honey.
The survey emphasizes the need to increase awareness efforts and support local beekeeping businesses to preserve the reputation of Estonian honey as a quality and unique product. Specialists believe the solution could lie in closer cooperation with schools, catering companies, and retail chains to highlight the added value of local honey.
