ПолитикаFormer Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has stated that she regrets not removing her husband Peter Murrell from his position as chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP) after she took over leadership of the party.
According to Sturgeon, at the time she believed it would be unfair to dismiss Murrell simply because he was her spouse. However, looking back now, she recognizes that this decision was a mistake and caused serious damage to both the party and her own reputation.
Murrell was convicted of embezzling more than £400,000 from SNP funds. The scandal surrounding the financial misconduct shook Scottish politics and damaged the party's standing, which had been the dominant political force in Scotland for many years.
The Murrell case became one of the largest political scandals in modern Scottish history. The investigation lasted several years and ended with a guilty verdict, which ultimately destroyed Murrell's reputation and dealt a serious blow to public trust in the SNP as a whole.
