This Week's Thought: Is Comfort Really Our Best Goal?
Life has become increasingly comfortable – the digital state, online services and smart solutions are everywhere. But is the constant pursuit of comfort always the right direction? An opinion piece invites us to consider whether sometimes it would be more beneficial to make things harder, not easier.
МнениеIn recent years, Estonia and the world at large have moved towards one clear objective: to make people's lives as comfortable, fast and precise as possible. The digital state, online voting, tax return filing with a few clicks and quick access to health data are just a few examples of this trend.
Even agriculture has undergone major change – smart devices and precision farming allow farmers to monitor what happens in their fields directly from home on a screen. Automation and digitalization have penetrated nearly every aspect of life, allowing us to accomplish more with less effort.
But this comfort revolution also raises a question: have we gone too far? Psychologists and philosophers have been warning for years that excessive comfort can dull human creativity, patience and resilience. The difficulties we face are often the very things that develop us and help us grow.
For this reason, the idea merits serious consideration that in some situations it could be beneficial to deliberately add a bit of discomfort to our lives. This does not mean abandoning the digital state or throwing away smart devices – rather, making conscious choices about where and when to push ourselves a little harder. Sometimes a long walk is more beneficial than a quick car ride, and a slowly handwritten letter makes a deeper impression than an automatically generated text.
Comfort is a superb tool, but a poor goal in itself. The question is not whether technology is good or bad – it is undoubtedly useful. The question is whether we can use it wisely, without it making us passive and dependent on convenience. Perhaps it is time to add a few lines about the benefits of discomfort to our digital society's development plans.
