TikTok Plans to Become a Super App
TikTok may be on track to become an app that people use for most of their digital activities. The platform appears to be headed toward super app status, consolidating various services into a single platform.
ТехнологииTikTok, one of the world's most popular social media platforms, may be taking steps to transform into a so-called super app – a single central digital hub where users can conduct most of their everyday online activities.
The super app concept is already well established in Asia – a typical example is Chinese WeChat, which combines messaging, payments, shopping, and much more. TikTok's parent company ByteDance is based in China and it is clear that the platform's developers are familiar with this model.
Currently, TikTok is known primarily as a short-video platform where young and older users spend hours scrolling through endless video feeds. However, the platform's capabilities have expanded significantly in recent years – with the addition of TikTok Shop's shopping function, live streams, and other interactive tools.
If TikTok becomes a true super app, it would mean that users could access entertainment, news, social interaction, shopping, and financial services all from one place. This would make the platform even more valuable to advertisers and create strong competition for other major platforms like Meta and Google.
Moving toward super app status is not without risk, however. TikTok is already under political pressure in the US and several other Western countries over data protection concerns and its ties to China. Expanding into even more services could bring additional regulatory scrutiny.
