Toomas Jürgenstein: Should the EELK discuss gender and sexuality?

A debate has emerged within the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church over whether the church should discuss important theological questions, including gender and sexuality. Toomas Jürgenstein addresses this issue and argues that theological discussion is essential.

An unusual debate has erupted in the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELK): should the church discuss gender and sexuality at all, or are such theological debates harmful to the congregation? The question may seem strange at first glance, but it reflects a deeper tension over how the church should address the complex issues facing modern society.

Theologian Toomas Jürgenstein points out that the issue is not gender or sexuality in themselves, but rather whether the church has a duty and right to conduct serious discussions on matters of importance to it. In his view, open and frank theological dialogue has been the force that kept the church vital throughout history.

Suppressing debate is a dangerous path

The desire to suppress discussion may stem from a wish to protect congregational unity, but Jürgenstein argues this approach achieves the opposite result. When people are unable to ask questions, doubt, and debate, the questions and doubts do not disappear – they only grow larger.

In recent years, the EELK has been confronted with numerous social changes that test the church's teaching. Questions related to gender and sexuality are perhaps the most acute, but not the only ones. The vitality of theological thought depends on whether the church dares to face them honestly.

What does theological responsibility mean?

Jürgenstein emphasizes that theological discussion does not automatically mean overturning dogmas or abandoning tradition. On the contrary – only through thorough reflection can the church clarify its positions and justify them, and show why they remain meaningful in today's world. The question is not whether to debate, but how to do so with responsibility and honesty.
