Demography is an issue that touches every society deeply – how the population grows, ages and changes determines a nation's future. Valdo Randpere (Reform Party) argues in his opinion piece that state intervention in steering demographic processes can be more harmful than commonly believed.

In Randpere's view, top-down policies do not solve deeper societal problems; they may actually amplify them. Demographic changes are often complex results of economic, cultural and social factors that cannot be rapidly altered through simple government policies.

According to Randpere, the recent demographics report contains substantive and well-considered proposals worthy of attention. But the question is not only what to do, but whether the political will and courage exist to do it. A good report remains just paper if policymakers are not prepared to make difficult decisions.

The MP emphasizes that demographics must be discussed honestly and factually, without demagoguery. Population issues tend to become emotionalized quickly in political debate, which impedes finding rational solutions. Estonia needs a long-term and consistent approach, not short-term populist fixes.
