Waste trucks catch fire every few days in Estonia – missorting is to blame

Warm weather has significantly increased the number of waste truck fires. Waste ignites or explodes in vehicles every few days. The main problem is improper waste sorting.

Waste truck fires have become dangerously frequent in Estonia – with warm weather, incidents are now occurring every few days. Hazardous materials found in waste cause fires or explosions in trucks, endangering both drivers and other road users.

The problem stems primarily from improper waste sorting. Flammable substances, batteries, accumulators, and other materials frequently end up in household waste, becoming extremely hazardous when exposed to high temperatures. Sunny and warm weather accelerates reactions in waste containers and in the truck's compacting equipment.

Waste management companies and the rescue service emphasize that every citizen bears responsibility for sorting their waste correctly. Batteries, accumulators, electronic devices, and chemicals must be taken to designated collection points and should never be thrown in with regular waste. A single improperly disposed battery can cause an entire garbage truck to catch fire.

The wave of fires has caused waste companies significant financial losses and disrupted waste collection schedules in several regions across Estonia. Truck repairs and replacements are costly, and this burden ultimately falls on consumers through service price increases.

Residents are urged to familiarize themselves with their local municipality's waste sorting guidelines and to use hazardous waste collection points. Proper sorting protects not only waste workers and property, but also helps preserve the environment.
