When to call a chimney sweep – spring or autumn?
As the heating season ends, many homeowners wonder whether the chimney should be cleaned immediately in spring or whether the work should be postponed until autumn. Both seasons have their advantages, but experts recommend considering several important factors.
ЭстонияAs warmer spring weather arrives, many Estonians stop heating and think about when is the right time to call a chimney sweep. Should the chimney be cleaned immediately after the heating season ends, or should this work be postponed until autumn, just before the new season begins?
Spring cleaning is preventive
Cleaning the chimney in spring means that soot and creosote won't accumulate in the chimney in the moisture of summer. A damp environment combined with soot residue and chemical deposits can cause chimney corrosion and unpleasant odours that spread throughout the house. In addition, spring is a quieter period for chimney sweeps, making it easier to arrange a time.
Autumn cleaning ensures safe heating
On the other hand, autumn cleaning is also a sensible choice. During summer, insects accumulate in the chimney, birds may nest there, and twigs and leaves can get into the flue. Autumn inspection before the first heating ensures that the heating system is safe and efficient. Many specialists recommend cleaning just before the season begins to ensure everything is in order.
The best solution depends on how intensively the heating system is used. For fireplaces and stoves that are used heavily, cleaning may be necessary at both times – in spring and autumn. In any case, a chimney sweep should be called at least once a year, as regular maintenance reduces fire risk and keeps the heating system efficient.
