Why are more young men in Estonia remaining single?
An increasing number of young men face the challenge of finding a romantic partner. The issue often stems from emotional and mental immaturity, which prevents the formation of healthy relationships.
КультураYoung men around the world, including in Estonia, increasingly face loneliness — not necessarily by choice, but due to a lack of skills. Society is growing concerned that many young people do not know how to create and maintain a romantic relationship.
Reddit hosts many candid moments of self-reflection: users admit that while they want a relationship, they feel they lack the mental and emotional maturity required for one. This openness points to a broader issue — many young men simply have not practised the social skills that a healthy partnership demands.
Screens replace real-life encounters
The proliferation of digital entertainment — video games, social media, and online forums — has created a situation where some young men spend most of their time isolated. This reduces opportunities to practise real-life interaction skills, which are essential in a romantic relationship.
Psychologists point out that the ability to express emotions, resolve conflicts, and be present for another person are qualities that must be actively developed. If a young man spends most of his time alone in front of a screen, that development stalls.
The solution lies in openness
According to experts, change begins with self-awareness — much like the Reddit user who honestly acknowledges his own limitations. Developing relationship skills requires practice in real life: meeting new people, tolerating vulnerability, and learning from setbacks. The digital world may offer a comfortable refuge, but it cannot replace real relationships.
