WSJ: The awkward return of state-funded media

Media figures who claim to champion free speech are now openly embracing state funding for journalism. The Wall Street Journal highlights the uncomfortable contradiction at the heart of this trend.

There is something deeply uncomfortable about watching the same media professionals who loudly champion free speech turn around and welcome government money with open arms. The Wall Street Journal has pointed to this growing contradiction, and it deserves scrutiny.

The tension is not new, but it has become more visible. Journalists and editors who built their careers on the principle that the press must remain independent from power are now among the loudest advocates for public subsidies. The argument, usually, is that the media landscape is in crisis and that without state support, quality journalism will simply disappear.

That may well be true in some markets. But the logic is uncomfortable: if editorial independence is the cornerstone of a free press, then accepting money from the very institutions journalists are meant to hold accountable creates a structural problem that no editorial charter can fully resolve. Governments do not write blank checks without expectations, even if those expectations are never spoken aloud.

What makes this moment particularly striking is the ideological reversal it represents. For decades, state involvement in media was treated as a hallmark of authoritarian regimes — something associated with Soviet broadcasting or Pravda, not with democratic societies that prided themselves on a free and combative press. Now the same framework is being rehabilitated as a public good.

The honest conversation would acknowledge that both things can be true at once: the media industry is genuinely struggling, and state funding genuinely poses risks to editorial freedom. Pretending otherwise, or celebrating government money as if it carries no strings, does a disservice to the very values these media figures say they hold dear.
